Frontiers Day

In conjunction with the Von Braun Memorial Dinner, the National Space Club – Huntsville sponsors a number of booths and displays used to promote elementary and secondary education in the North Alabama area. Students and teachers from surrounding schools visit the event, held during the day prior to the VBMD and participate in various activities which promote an increased awareness of space and technology. Last years event drew hundreds of kids from the surrounding community.

STEDTRAIN

STEDTRAIN is the Science and Technology Education and Training Program of HATS (Huntsville Area Technical Societies). STEDTRAIN was formed during the summer of 1988 by a small group members of the North Alabama Chapter of the World Future Society. The group saw as a big problem the fact that no community organization or mechanism existed for bringing together teachers, parents, volunteers, educational administrators, business people, technical professionals, i.e., the general community, to discuss science and technology K-12 educational policies and needs in order to generate community consensus and coordinated, volunteer implementations when and where appropriate. A series of annual conferences was initiated in 1995. After the second conference, it became apparent that STEDTRAIN was developing beyond the resources of the small World Future Society group. Fortunately, STEDTRAIN mission and goals fitted nicely with the HATS Education Directorate mission and goals, so STEDTRAIN became incorporated into the HATS organization as a committee of the HATS Education Directorate in the Spring of 1997. When STEDTRAIN became incorporated into the HATS organization, the administration of the HATS STEDTRAIN Seed Grant Program remained within the STEDTRAIN Committee with HATS Executive Board oversight. The program was proving so successful that the STEDTRAIN Committee decided to make it the focus of its efforts. HATS has made the program its major flagship program.

Citizens for Space Exploration (CFSE) - Washington Fly-In

Citizens for Space Exploration (CSE) is comprised of a diverse group of small and large business representatives, students and teachers, and county/municipal officials and employees who support America’s investment in space exploration. The National Space Club – Huntsville sponsors student participation in the Washington DC Keep It Sold event. 2007 marked the 16th annual trip of CSE – formerly known as National Keep It Sold – to Washington, D.C. for meetings with Congress. CSE’s bottom-line message was to advocate no less than full funding of NASA’s FY08 budget request and support for America’s space exploration program. CSE members also promoted a letter signed by more than 20 aerospace and technology company CEOs calling for more NASA funds and referenced efforts by Senators Mikulski (D-MD) and Hutchison (R-TX) to push for more funding for NASA. More than 150 citizen taxpayers – including 36 university students/educators – from 26 states (listed on page 3) met with 317 congressional offices representing 45 states to advocate on behalf of NASA and space exploration. CSE visited with 90% of freshman member offices in the Senate and 68% of all House freshman member offices.

Space Camp & Space Academy

Each year, the National Space Club – Huntsville sponsors student participation in Space Camp and Space Academy. Funding is provided to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center to allow under privileged youth the opportunity to experience a once in a life time camp experience. Selection is handled through ongoing NSC cooperation with US S&RC staff.

  • Space Camp uses space to excite and educate children ages 9-11 in the fields of math, science and technology. Teamwork, self-confidence and communication will be achieved through state-of-the-art simulations, missions, rocket building and robotics. Everything you need to know about Space Shuttle Systems and life aboard the Orbiter and Space Station. Try out space food, learn to sleep in space and even how to go to the bathroom in space! Astronaut training will continue on the Multi-Axis trainer that spins you all around, just like the Mercury Astronauts. You will take a turn on the 5-Degrees of Freedom Chair (it’s like a chair floating on air) training just like the Gemini astronauts. Next, you will train like Apollo astronauts did for their trip to the moon by taking a walk in the 1/6th Gravity Chair! And finally, campers strap on our own version of a jet pack — an MMU, that’s NASA talk for a Manned Maneuvering Unit - and maneuver around on a cushion of air. Campers will take time off from a busy training schedule for water activities, but not too much, because it’s off to rocket construction to build and launch your own one-stage model rocket. Space Academy

  • Space Academy is an increased intensity program of astronaut and mission training and academics. Simulated missions to a space station and crew rotation highlight the week. Trainees who want to be Astronauts must learn to think like astronauts and our Space Academy Programs are designed to do just that! Participants will have three fields of specialized study (or track options) to choose from: AVIATION, SPACE, and ROBOTICS tracks. Team-Building skills, Space Simulators Training and Space Shuttle Mission Training are just a few of the activities we have waiting for you. Trainees will participate in Shuttle Missions, Space Simulators, build & launch rockets and sample space food.
